Services

Allergy Testing/Treatment

Many animals silently suffer from allergy problems. We offer full-service allergy testing through Pet Allergy Labs. From a simple and painless blood sample, the lab can determine what your pet is allergic to from a panel of over 150 different allergens. The lab can then manufacture an allergy serum so your pet can receive the needed allergy injections to lessen the unwanted effects the allergens have on your pet. That means less itching and scratching!

Behavior Counseling

Behavioral problems are the number one reason pets are taken to animal shelters. If you are experiencing a behavioral problem with your pet we offer examinations, counseling, behavior modification programs, and sometimes drug therapy to help resolve the issue. We can also refer you to veterinarians specializing in behavior medicine as the situation warrants.

Boarding & Day Care

While you're away, your pet can stay at Woodside Veterinary Hospital's spacious indoor boarding facility. Pet boarding and day care is available 365 days per year. We know that leaving your pet behind while you are away is difficult-not only for you, but for your beloved companions too. That's why our staff makes sure each pet receives plenty of attention, playtime, and frequent walks. All meals, blankets, toys and walks are included with daily boarding prices. We feed Hill's Science Diet, but can feed your own pet food if you prefer. And, leave us a list of services you'd like to have performed and we can do them while your pet is boarding. Our staff continually monitors all boarding animals for any signs of illness, and our doctors are always available to treat your pet if needed. Reservations are necessary, so please call today to reserve your spot!

Comprehensive Physical Exams and Wellness Exams

When it comes to keeping your healthy, prevention is key. We encourage preventive health care through regular physical examinations, bloodwork, vaccinations, parasite control, and proper nutrition. A regular physical examination is just as important for your pet as it is for you. Our veterinarians recommend a complete physical examination for your pet at least once per year, though more frequent exams are encouraged. During a physical exam, we will listen to your pet's heart and lungs, evaluate your pet's vision and hearing, look for any unusual lumps or swelling, palpate the abdomen, examine the joints and muscles for signs of swelling and arthritis, check your pet's teeth and oral cavity, and evaluate your pet's hair coat.

Routine examinations give us the opportunity to develop a picture of your pet's overall health. Exams are also essential for catching problems before they become serious health issues-and more expensive to treat. Having a complete picture of your pet's health, will aid your veterinarian in future diagnosis and treatment.

Dental Services & Teeth Cleaning

Keeping your pet's teeth clean and healthy doesn't just prevent bad breath. Proper dental care can prevent periodontal disease, the build-up of bacteria and plaque on your pet's teeth and gums. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause bleeding and inflammation of the gums, gum recession, alveolar bone loss and tooth mobility. As the disease progresess, the bacteria can travel through the blood and damage your pet's heart, liver and kidneys. Periodontal disease is extremely common, and more than 80 percent of dogs and cats have this problem by four years of age.

Dental exams and cleanings every 6 to 12 months can help prevent periodontal disease and lead to better health for your pet. Your pet's dental cleaning begins with a physical examination, in order to evaluate your pet's health and determine the appropriate anesthesia to be used during the procedure. Tartar is removed from your pet's teeth with a hand scaler; next, a periodontal probe checks for pockets under the gumline-where periodontal disease and bad breath start. An ultrasonic scaler is then used to clean above the gumline, while a curette cleans and smooths the teeth under the gumline. Your pet's teeth are then polished and a fluoride treatment is given to help delay tartar build-up. Following the cleaning, we can discuss with you how best to care for your pet's teeth at home. Say "no" to doggy breath and yes to routine dental care!

Diagnostic Care & In-House Testing

Your pet cannot tell us when he or she is sick and sometimes, physical exams do not detect all the signs of disease. Routine blood testing helps us spot diseases, parasites, and other health problems that may not be visible during a physical exam. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic in-house laboratory can measure almost 100 laboratory values, with results often available in just a few minutes. This source provides life-saving information when it is needed most.

Our extensive laboratory services provide information that is critical to the sick or injured pet. We have access, both in-house and at our centralized reference lab, to extensive testing, allowing animals to receive appropriate treatment in a timely manner. Our team of experienced veterinarians and support staff are here to assist you with the care needed throughout the life of your pet.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An electrocardiogram is a diagnostic test that is used for recording the heart's electrical activity. An ECG is useful in identifying cardiac arrhythmias, heart disease, heart blocks and other cardiac problems. We provide ECG services on-site , and results are interpreted by a Cardiology Specialist. While a doctor can usually pick up a heart murmur by stethoscope, more serious heart problems would be diagnosed with an ECG.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, performed on an anesthetized patient, which can have great diagnostic and therapeutic value. Endoscopy is often indicated when routine blood and urine tests, radiographs and/or ultrasonography does not give the complete diagnostic picture. It is used to evaluate the esophagus, stomach and intestinal tract of dogs and cats. During an endoscopic procedure, the veterinarian can take a biopsy of any abnormal tissue that is visualized. The veterinarian can utilize the endoscope on horses to evaluate problems or conditions of the upper respiratory tract. Conditions that can be visualized would be an entrapped epiglottis, exercised induced pulmonary hemorrhage (bleeding) and dorsal displacement of the soft palate.

This certification is mainly associated with breeding dogs to ensure that undesirable bone structure traits are not passed onto new litters of puppies. It is recommended that all dog breeders look into this service before breeding a dog for the first time.

Oncology (cancer treatment)

The word 'cancer' strikes fear in all of us; however, with new advances in veterinary medicine, many pets are living longer with a greatly improved quality of life.

Successful cancer treatment often lies in early detection. Early detection can be difficult at times as cancer may not only present itself as a lump on the skin, but may arise inside the body. If this occurs, a veterinary examination can often reveal the tumor. If left undiagnosed, the disease may not be noticed until clinical symptoms develop.

Treatment depends on the type and location of the cancer. If possible, surgical removal of the tumor is recommended. Some types of cancer are responsive to chemotherapy, which include a variety of oral and injectable drugs. Dogs and cats tend to tolerate chemotherapy well and do not often develop side effects similar to humans.

Orthopedic Surgery

We are fully equipped to perform most common orthopedic procedures including fracture repairs, joint surgery, bone biopsies, etc. We also can offer in-hospital referral with a board-certified veterinary surgeon to perform complicated orthopedic surgeries, such as TPLO procedures, to correct damaged cruciate ligaments.

Payment Options

Payments are the responsibility of the client at the time of the visit. For your convenience, we accept VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, Cash and Checks. Our staff will provide you with a written estimate of treatment costs if your pet is hospitalized or needs a non-routine surgical procedure. We require a deposit of 50% of the estimate prior to admitting your pet, and the balance is due at the time your pet is discharged. Payment plans are available during regular business hours for certain cases or situations if needed. We'll try our best to help you through any unexpected situations!

Pet Identification and Microchip System

A microchip is a tiny electronic device, about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath a pet's skin between the shoulder blades, and stays there for the pet's entire life. This procedure is as easy and as painless as a vaccination.

Each microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the owner and pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinary hospitals and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips. If a lost pet is found and a microchip is scanned the registry is called and the owner can be contacted.

Pharmacy

We stock an extensive drug inventory so medications can be dispensed before leaving the clinic. We also stock all of the flea & tick products out there, as well as most heartworm prevention. We strongly recommend obtaining your medications from a veterinarian rather than an online pharmacy. For safety reasons, you need to know that your pet's medications are coming directly from the manufacturer and not a third party. All of our medications are purchased directly from the manufacturers and are fully guaranteed by those companies because of that. Why settle for anything less?

Puppy and Kitten Examinations and Vaccinations

Young puppies and kittens should receive their physical examination and first set of vaccinations at six to nine weeks of age. Additional exams and vaccinations are given every two to four weeks until they are twelve to sixteen weeks old. Thereafter regular booster vaccinations should be given. During your pet's initial examinations you will also receive behavioral advice, nutritional counseling, and recommendations on disease prevention. This advice can go a long way towards preventing problems in your pet's adult life.

Radiology (X-rays)

We have a state-of-the-art X-ray machine that produces excellent quality radiographs. Radiographs or X-rays are extremely helpful for diagnosing and monitoring many medical and surgical problems. Radiographs are useful in pinpointing arthritis, bone fractures or dislocations, tumors, obstructions and foreign bodies (such as bones or chew toys in your pet's stomach) and pneumonia. They are also used for diagnosing heart and lung disease, heartworm disease, gastrointestinal problems and bladder stones. When used in conjunction with other diagnostic procedures, radiographs can accurately diagnose problems, making surgery easier for your pet and your veterinarian.

Senior Pet Care and Geriatric Pet Evaluations

In recent years, great strides have been made in recognizing the special needs and requirements of our "senior citizen" dogs and cats. Our veterinarians are well equipped with the knowledge and diagnostic tools to identify age related problems and formulate realistic strategies to allow our pets to live longer and healthier lives. If your dog is seven to nine years of age or older (depending on breed) or your cat is ten years of age or older, it is now in its geriatric years. We will be happy to discuss with you our recommendations for geriatric testing and geriatric diets.

Spay & Neuter

Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S. and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there are not enough homes for all the animals. As a result, every year 4 to 6 million animals are euthanized because there are no homes for them.

Spay and neuter your pet! In addition to saving lives, spaying and neutering can also drastically improve your pet's health and life expectancy. The idea that pets become fat or lazy when they are spayed or neutered is a myth. Sterilized pets lead healthier, longer lives. Spaying a female eliminates the possibility of uterine and ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer. Neutering a male reduces the risk of prostate disease and testicular cancer. Neutering also makes your pet more affectionate and less likely to roam, get in fights, or become lost.

Surgical Care

Our hospital is well-equipped to perform most minor and major surgical procedures from spays and neuters to more complicated emergency, orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries, and major abdominal surgery.

Prior to surgery, each patient receives a thorough physical examination to identify any existing medical conditions that might endanger your pet's health. Because not all problems are visual or can be detected on examination, we also recommend preanesthetic blood testing. This test not only gives us a more complete picture of your pet's health, but also allows us to tailor an anesthetic regime that is specific for your pet.

We offer a variety of anesthetic protocols tailored to your pet's individual needs. We have state-of-the-art anesthetic machines. We also utilize a wide variety of anesthetic monitoring devices including blood pressure monitors, respiratory monitors and other cardiac monitoring equipment.

Pain management is an important part of our pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative anesthetic and medical protocol. All surgical patients, including those undergoing routine procedures such as spays or neuters, receive pain control medications. We urge you to discuss operative pain management options with our staff.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is a non-invasive imaging procedure that complements X-rays and allows our doctors to better visualize internal organs in the chest and abdomen. This painless diagnostic technique is normally done without sedation. An ultrasound provides us with a real-time "movie" of what is happening inside your pet's body. It produces a visual map of the interior of the body and is often crucial to the comprehensive diagnosis of diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen, gallbladder and other internal organs. Ultrasonography is invaluable for making treatment decisions for various types of heart disease, organ abnormalities or abdominal growths. It also allows us to biopsy organs such as the liver, kidney and spleen if needed through a tiny "keyhole" incision. Using the ultrasound image as a guide, major surgery is avoided and your pet can often go home the same day.

Ultrasonography is also used to detect pregnancy and to monitor the progress of the pregnancy as well as detect any possible abnormalities or problems.

Your pet can go home immediately afterward, resulting in a stress-free, comfortable visit for both your pet and you.
